On the 17th of October 2013 Microsoft released an updated version of windows 8, this update is free for anyone running a licensed copy of windows 8. The updated version of windows has a few new improvements and features included:
To get your free copy of windows 8.1 you will need to head over to the windows store. To do this click on the Store App Icon.
If you don’t see this on your start screen don’t panic, simply type in store on the start screen and it will appear. Give it a click and once opened you should see an advert like the one below to upgrade to windows 8.1 for free. If not click on this link.
Your documents and programs should all be compatible with the new version but just in case you are not sure you can download and run Microsoft’s Upgrade Assistant. This will scan your computer and will tell you what will work or what programs will need re-installed once the update is finished.
The update is around 3.45GB (yeah pretty big) so it will take a while for it to download depending on your broadband connection but you can still work away on your PC. Once downloaded the upgrade will start installing in the background and then you will be informed that your PC will need to be restarted.
During the installation you will be prompted to accept the terms and conditions (agreement) you will need to accept, if not it will revert back to windows 8. Because windows 8.1 is more connected to SkyDrive (online Storage) you will need to input your Microsoft Hotmail account. Email and Password for you to be able to continue.
The update will continue upgrading your PC and then after a short while you should be presented with the start screen and windows 8.1 is now installed.
